Dear South Amboy Families, 

If you’ve spent time around South Amboy, you know the name Tony Gonsalves—or simply "Tony G."

For 39 years Tony was a teacher in the high school. This fall he begins his 50th year coaching the boys soccer team—a incredible 50-year coaching legacy—Tony G was far more than a figure on the sideline. He was a cornerstone of our community, a steady guide, and a mentor to generations of student-athletes. He taught us about resilience, integrity, showing up for one another, and taking pride in where we come from. The standard he set in the classroom and on our fields shaped the character of our entire town. 

To honor those 50 remarkable years and ensure his impact lives on for generations to come, we have established the Tony G. Legacy Scholarship.

This is an endowed scholarship, which means once fully funded, it will exist in perpetuity—providing financial support to graduating South Amboy seniors forever. Administered by New Jersey Youth Soccer, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, this permanent fund will invest in our town’s bright young minds year after year, indefinitely. The scholarship can be used for college or trade school.

Creating a gift that lasts forever takes a united community effort. Here is how you can stand with us and support our local graduates: 

● Join Us for the Inaugural Dinner: We are holding a celebration dinner on October 24, 2026, right here in South Amboy. It will be a memorable night to reconnect, share stories, enjoy great food, and celebrate Coach Tony’s historic 50-year contribution to our youth. Every ticket includes a donation to the scholarship fund, food, soft drinks, beer & wine and a DJ. 

● Make a Donation: To build an endowment that lasts forever, every contribution matters. Gifts in any denomination—whether $10, $50, $100, or more. Every dollar contributed today directly secures a scholarship for a South Amboy student tomorrow, and every year after that.
