YMCA Announces New Autism Swims Program
Posted Mar 9, 2017, 8:57 AM by Michael Elson
The YMCA is now offering swim instruction for children between the ages of 8-15 who have been diagnosed with Autism or Asperger's Syndrome. This pilot program will provide critical, possibly life-saving swim lessons for children with Autism or Asperger's Syndrome. It is a well-documented fact that the drowning rate in autistic children is 91%! Therefore, it is the goal of the YMCA to teach as many special needs children as possible to swim. The program is currently being offered at the Metuchen and South Amboy YMCAs. It is geared towards children ages 8-15 that have been diagnosed with Autism or Asperger's Syndrome.Autism Speaks has provided limited grant money to provide these lessons at no charge to financially disadvantaged families. Please call for details.Metuchen YMCA: Thursdays -Contact: Danica Lindsey at 732-548-2044, Ext. 2212South Amboy YMCA: Saturdays -Contact: Sue Chanese, 732-553-9622, Ext. 4208
